Gurudev’s mother, Vishalakshi, was from a small village in South India. His father, Acharya Ratnananda or Pitaji as he is now known, was a businessman from Bangalore as well as a scholar of ancient Indian sciences, including Ayurveda. Gurudev’s grandfather was a court justice in Bangalore, associated with Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian Independence movement., He gave away much of his wealth to support the freedom movement.
