Response to Typhoon Morakot

  • Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan on August 7th, 2009 and dumped 2600 millimeters (102 inches) of rain on Southern Taiwan within 2 days. This rainfall exceeded the average annual rainfall of Taiwan.
  • The typhoon, bringing a heavy rain, triggered floods and mudslides. Spawned mudslide engulfed mountain villages in southern Taiwan and over 500 people were buried alive.
  • About 31,000 people have been rescued from mud and debris, and ferried to safety. Moreover, Morakot left more than 7000 homeless.
  • As of Sept. 4th, Official figures stated 614 dead, 69 non-identifiable dead bodies, 75 missing; the agriculture sector, corps and animal husbandry, aquaculture sector incurred an estimated NT$16.4 billion in economic losses.
  • More than 30 countries offered financial assistance, helicopters, medication and other supplies.
  • It is considered the most severe natural disaster to Taiwan in 50 years.

Our Response

8 days after the disaster, The Art of Living (AOL) Association, Rep. of China. responded quickly to the disaster by forming a trauma relief work team. On Tuesday, 18th August, a team of 11 people went into the disaster affected area to provide Post-Trauma Relief Workshops to flood victims, rescue personnel and volunteers.

Our Commitment

This report concludes the first stage of our Trauma Relief program in the affected areas in Southern Taiwan due to Typhoon Morakot. We are committed to further conduct more Trauma Relief programs and support systems to victims of the disaster as well as the numerous rescue personnel and volunteers helping to rebuild and rehabilitate the communities affected.
