Om Swasti Astu. Salam Valikom. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Since I became a Mayor I would always say that running a city is actually same like running a house. I become like a mother and wife for the city.

In Surabaya since we have limited resources in terms of human resources and also budget resources we need to take all stakeholders together to work with us to develop Surabaya.I always try to motivate the mother and the housewife to actively participate in development of the city in terms of producing a clean, green and beautiful city and also to develop their children as well.

In Surabaya, for education and healthcare, we provide a free service for people and we always try to empower the children living condition in terms of building parks, sports facility and other facility that they need. We would like to improve the living condition for the children in terms of environment and one of the challenges that we have is a Red district area – we closed down last year. A remarkable transformation has already happened. The red district area has been transformed into an area to have SME of Handicrafts, food sector and other informal activity. And they get a lot of benefits from this activity. They used to only get bad name for the area, but now the price of the land has increased.

We also provide facilities for children with public libraries and reading centres for almost 970 places. We also have global learning centres where children and others can get free internet training.

We also prepare the children and the youngster to face Global economy by having free language training center for 11 languages with volunteers help.

We are proud to say that the number of poor households in Surabaya are decreasing and now only 3% are poor in Surabaya and we do that by making the house wives become economic heroes by engaging in SMEs and they are now exporting their products.

In surabaya we provide a comprehensive health center for babies, teenager and the elderly. For example for teenagers we provide free counselling center so that they can face the challenge, also for the elderly we provide free medical health checkup and also they get economic empowerment training .

We provide a social shelter for children for example for children living in the red district area because they have sex addicts and drug addicts’ problem. We also have a social shelter for children with special needs for example children with autism and down children patient and we also have shelter for street children living in the street as they do not have their parents to take care of them for example we have this training program and two years ago they won the silver medal in C games and last year they went to Brazil for soccer games and they also won a medal.

Ladies and gentlemen why Surabaya can move so fast is because we have a direct involvement from all parties and I also directly try to look and see the condition in the people (basically she directly interacts with them). I look for housewives who do not have a job and offer them how to work. I also train them to clean their compound or urban village and I also become the role model for giving the books and also balls to play with the children.

Lastly I would like to underline that Surabaya has grown so much due to the involvement of all the stakeholder and we run the city as we run a family. Thank you very much.
